    What is an SEO Specialist?

To put it simply, a Search Engine Optimization Specialist or an SEO Specialist for short, is the person who gets your website to rank high in Google, Bing, Yahoo and other various search engines. Ideally they get rankings in the #1 spot for the keywords that bring in the most high-value customers, clients, patients and/or donor.

BrainStation, a leading technical education company has a great breakdown with further details in this article.

This is the one person on your time that, if the search volume for your offerings and message-to-market match are ideal for organic traffic, can ensure that there is a steady stream of eyeballs looking at what your company has to offer.

Finding a good organic SEO specialist can be frustrating.

Why is finding a decently reliable and forward-thinking organic SEO specialist so frustrating? After all my years of making the nerds at Google loose sleep, it has come down to 2 things:

    1. Not understand direct response and staying too close to "by-the-book" quantification, and
    2. Not having sound business acumen to give web traffic a chance to become paying customers.

Really gifted, left-brained thinkers can conduct very deep keyword research, perform extremely technical SEO and website architecture and lay out highly effective backlinking strategies. However, the core elements of high quality content production, on-page optimization and a sound backlink inventory are nothing new. In fact, that's the problem. 9 out of 10 SEO specialist will focus on the elements that move web pages up in rankings, yet forget that once a visitor is on the page, what happens on that page matters. A lot.

It can be very easy to focus on the on-page elements that are going to drive rankings and increase traffic, and just leave it at that. But that's only really the start in a fully calculated, matured direct response marketing system.

So what makes a good Search Engine Optimization Specialist?

A firm grip on the core SEO components is essential, ideally across several years and in multiple industries. As well it can help if the search engine optimization specialist has ranked pages in both B2C and B2B climates, so that they have an understanding of the simple principle that different users need different content to convert clicks into cash flow.

Then there's backlinking. Being able to lay out a solid backlinking strategy and consistently source high quality links that don't fizzle out in 7-8 weeks and have intelligent anchor text variation is the skill that can pay the bills.

Oh and of course, no black hat.

What about an SEO Consultant? What's the difference?

There is sometimes not too much difference between an SEO consultant versus a specialist, unless you factor in scale. This refers to size of the operation of course, but also more quantifiably speaking, such as the volume of websites that need ranking, the number of core pages based on keyword research, and the volume of content that needs to be produced.

There is also a big difference between having an SEO professional work in-house on ranking needs versus for multiple clients, such as in an agency setting. Also consider if the expertise needed is a one-time occurrence, on an as-needed basis, or reoccurring. Lastly there is competition. The stronger the competition, the more the need for high quality SEO for a longer period of time.

An Organic SEO Specialist know how to do Local SEO as well.

They should be able to get #1 Google map rankings over time. Need for local rankings can and do depend largely on the demand for the organic SEO specialists performance. For example, simple questions like "how many of our highest-value customers come from Google Maps?", "how many locations do we need to rank for?", "how strong is the established competition in the Google Map rankings?". These are items that need 100% crystal clarity before moving forward in any way.

Also consider that Google has been getting stricter in terms of verifying Google My Business listings and seems to be on a hair trigger in terms of penalization. Your organic SEO specialist needs to know this and adapt it to their methodologies of getting maps rankings.

Two important points about your SEO specialist job description

The first thing NOT to do is oversimplify or overcomplicate.

Both are dangerous. Beware oversimplification, 10 times out of 10 this will lead to poor results in rankings, resources wasted and you might have fallen for a great sales pitch with no results to be had on the back end. All huff no puff. Also beware of over complication. While the former is normally easily weeded out in the beginning phases of acquiring an SEO specialist, the former normally comes after, and unfortunately is much more common.

Overcomplication is frequent in the Search Engine Optimization industry simply just due to the technical nature of SEO. There is also a phenomenon when applying the irrational nature of humans to SEO known as the "pissing contest". Everybody wants to be the smartest in the room, and won't think twice about spewing overly technical knowledge in an effort to actually be the smartest (sounding) person in the room. This leads to not being able to see the forest for the trees, and can even lead to over-optimization.

    The Oversimplifying SEO Specialist

    - promises rankings in any climate/competition
    - makes SEO look "easy" and skips important nuances
    - unrealistic projections, especially on time needed to rank
    - drives low quality, often toxic backlinks to key target pages

    The Overcomplicating SEO Specialist

    - gets bogged down in competitive details, creates obstacles
    - makes SEO look "excruciating" and leaves people confused
    - unrealistic projections, especially on time needed to rank
    - drives low quality, often toxic backlinks to key target pages

So then what is an ideal SEO specialist?

Simply put: one who gets top rankings.

However that answer is too of simple a truth. It comes down to what happens on the page and the business acumen needed to move that website visitor along a path to becoming a high-value customer, client, patient or donor.

Hundred's of thousands of website visitors to a target web page is the greatest, however if there's no next step for the visitor or worse, there are obstacles in the way, then those clicks are empty. All those hours spent on optimization and technical fortitude and all that time and money spent on backlinking goes absolutely nowhere.

Why a Search Engine Specialist is not a commodity

With the advent of freelance and pay-per-service sites such as Upwork and Fiverr gaining popularity, it's now easier than ever to find an SEO specialist at basement level prices. This is not actually a good thing.

The old axiom "you get what you pay for" rings so true in this case. These types of contractor sites have unfortunately devalued the perception of paying a Search Engine Specialist handsomely and being rewarded with top rankings. Too many times people go searching for cheap SEO professionals, actually follow through with the gig and more often than not end up with a negative effect.

This is the reality, and if it doesn't scare you away from doing cheap SEO then I'm afraid you cannot be helped. Please click here sooner than later.
